Detailed History and Climate

High Surf Advisory
Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:42 am PST on March 11, 2010

... High surf advisory in effect from 10 am this morning to 10 am
PST Friday for the north and central Washington coast...

Large swells of 20 feet will reach the central and North
Washington coast by later this morning. Swell heights will build
and remain in the 20 to 24 foot range this afternoon through
Friday morning before slowly subsiding below 20 feet Friday
afternoon.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area... producing rip currents and localized beach
erosion. It is extremely dangerous to fish or observe waves from
rocks during high surf conditions. Unwary beach walkers can be
caught off guard as waves suddenly race farther up the beach than
normal.

High Wind Watch
Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:02 am PST on March 11, 2010

... High wind watch in effect from late tonight through Friday
morning for the north and central Washington coast...

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a high wind
watch... which is in effect from late tonight through Friday
morning.

A low pressure system will develop off the Oregon coast late
tonight and move northeast into western Washington Friday morning.
Depending on the eventual track and strength of the low... strong
winds are possible Friday morning on the coast.

* Winds: south to southwest winds 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 60
mph are possible.

* Timing: the most likely time for strongest wind would be during
the morning hours Friday between 4 am and noon.

* Impacts: if these strong winds develop as some forecast guidance
suggests... there is a risk of some down trees and power lines
Friday morning.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A high wind watch means there is the potential for a hazardous
wind event. Sustained winds of at least 40 mph... or gusts of 58
mph or higher may occur on the Washington coast.
